Visitors will experience a deep look at original pieces from some of her most celebrated illustrated books, including Bird, Eliza's Freedom Road, White Water, A Place Where Hurricanes Happen, and Our Children Can Soar: A Celebration of Rosa, Barack, and the Pioneers of Change. Whether you are an art lover, a student of history, or a family exploring together, this exhibition offers an inspiring look at how illustration can reflect community landscapes and sow seeds of hope for the future. About the Artist Shadra Strickland is an award-winning illustrator, author, and educator whose work beautifully honors diverse human experiences. She holds a BFA from Syracuse University and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Strickland burst onto the children's literature scene with her debut book, Bird (written by Zetta Elliott), which won the prestigious Ezra Jack Keats New Illustrator Award and the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award. Known for her mastery across various mediums—including watercolor, ink, and digital media—she crafts landscapes that feel both intimate and expansive. In addition to creating beloved picture books, Strickland shares her passion for visual storytelling by teaching illustration to the next generation of artists at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Her artwork is widely celebrated for its ability to give voice to complex histories while maintaining an enduring sense of hope and joy.
