About

A flooded granite quarry that is now Atlanta's 2.4-billion-gallon emergency drinking water reserve — enough to supply the city for 30-90 days if the Chattahoochee fails. The quarry operated for over 100 years, quarrying the granite that rebuilt Atlanta after Sherman. Much of that labor was done by convicts in horrific conditions. The quarry closed in the early 2000s, flooded naturally, and was converted into Westside Park in 2021. The overlook reveals an impossibly deep turquoise lake surrounded by 200-foot granite walls.
